Mercedes 230 carburettor

I have an opportunuty to buy a nice 1976 230 (signal red!) 4-cyl. The seller says the only major issue with it is a carburettor proglem which makes the car hard to start. He says he was quoted $1200 to replace the carb. What kind of carb does this car have, are rebuild kits available or is it possible to fit a Weber carb? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

It's called a Stromberg CD 170 and is very common on a lot english cars of the 70's.It would be a sure thing that the carb just needs some auto trans fluid in the container on top.It also has a water controlled choke device,so make sure the two hoses running to carb are hooked up OK.
If it starts but wont acelerate properly, the diapragm in the top of the carb has a hole in it.The Best place to buy a repair kit is any English sports car parts place uch as "Moss" or "Rimmer Brothers "in the UK.( triumph dealers )
Some BMW'S OF THE 70'S HAD THEM IN PAIRS SO THERE IS ANOTHER SOURCE OF cHEAP CARBS.
Don't go wasting far too much hard earned cash on an overpriced article!!!

Stromberg carburettor

Thanks for the useful information. The car has done 145,000 miles so I'd imagine the carb is worn. I have no idea how long they last. I read on some Mercedes site that this carb is difficult to rebuild and that a worn carburettor can cause the engine to run lean or rich which can damage the engine.. I'll see if I can hunt down a rebuild kit. Does anyone rebuild these carburettors. I'm in the USA.

That Stromberg is a piece of cake. They last forever. You just need to find the right person to repair it. Take it from someone who worked on those carbs when they were new.
