given 280

My neighbor has a 1972 Mercedes Benz 280 and he told me that it was mine if I wanted to come get it, it has 60,000 original miles, interior is perfect and all intact, the body has a few little rust spots (surface) and one hole which I plan on repairing..the car is clean with no interior stains or tears in the seats. I plan on cleaning the car, fixing the little bit of body work and seeing what its worth. Any ideas on what that kind of car would be worth, its a light blue color car.

Worth of 280

I've been monitoring prices on Ebay and Craigslist and elsewhere for a couple of months. Prices range from $1000 for a poor condition to around $7500 for immaculate example. Average prices are $3000-$5000. The seat upholstery, carpet, headliner, window and door seals are very expensive to replace if not in good condition. A rebult engine costs around $4000.

No kidding. I just got a quote on complete new leather skins for the seats, pads, and full carpet kit for my 280 project car. I feel like I should just commit myself to the nut house for even considering it.

I figure the cost of restoration for this car will easily hit the $10k mark, and that's with me doing most of the labor. I've seen *very* nice examples of 250's and 280's go for under $5k (with extensive suspension and engine refreshing work already done). My insanity is that I don't just buy one...oh well.
