I'm in the middle of doing a valve job and other engine work on my 4.5L. This is not difficult, but certainly is expensive, time consuming and I would not consider it an easy job either. It may be well worth your while to look into a used, serviceable engine to replace yours. This is because it is difficult to contain the impulse of "while I'm there, I may as well replace the following, or have the crank turned and main bearings installed:" and the list never ends. So, what starts off being a replacement for a blown/leaking head gasket, results in a major overhaul because the shop won't warrant any engine with unknown defects, and I can't blame them. My suggestion is to check your local dismantlers and see what kind of deal you can swing. Should you find something of interest, ask them to do a compression or leak-down test before you buy it. The latter being the preferred method. If you are not familiar with this procedure, do a Google on "cylinder leakdown testing" -- there is lots of info on how to do it properly and what the procedure reveals.

Good luck!

I had the headgasket done on my w126. It cost about $1100 or so.

Sounds like you need a head gasket and now rings too.

Must have smoked like the dickens when running. I agree with Ike, definitely need to tear the engine apart and assess all the damage.
