Might be a worn window regulator, but I really hope not...

Hey Mate,
Hi, don't know if this will be of any help at all but....... My passenger window regulator was replaced with a 3 wire version and it had a 2 wire originally.

The big problem is that with the 2 wire system the switch itself was/is a complicated little son of a b!tch and it switchs the polarity of the 2 wires going to the regulator. So, press the button one way and you'll have power going to wire 1 and earth going to wire 2. Press the switch the other way and you have earth going to wire 1 and power going to wire 2.

The 3 wire system is about 10 millions times more simple, it just sends power to either the up side of the regulator or power to the down side depending on which way the switch is pushed.

I'm thinking that the jerking you described could be because if the relays clicking on and off? I know it may not be that too, but I thought that I'm if shared my knowledge it may help a little. It could be that they get power for a sec and switch back off cause of some other interferience. Kind of like the a earth problem that causes the relay to work, but only for a sec before it opens again, but when it opens it is allowed to close again....does that make any sence at all??

It took me about a week working solid to get all my windows working and it was a horrid task. The main prob for me was figuring how the spastic 2 wire system was ment to work. You only have 2 wires going to each window, but 16 wires going to the switches.

Hope my explaintion helped some.....but probably not........

Thanks for the info. I would say that the project to restore the power windows has been the most difficult thing I've ever tried to do to a car. I can imagine that it is probably more frustrating to convert a 3-wire motor to work in the 2-wire system.

The stuttering turns out to actually be the deteriorating window channel that is moving around and gumming up the window movement. I am going to try glue into place temporaily while I try to find some replacement channel.

I think the regulator is OK as it is brand new from Mercedes Benz. I think the channel is warped and/or rotten in some places and is inhibiting the window movement.

You should probably do all the channel for the four doors -- that was a very common job as I recall. You may want to do the horizontal felt strips at the same time.

We have it: $250 for a 20-meter roll, which is enough to do 2 cars (8 doors).

You can, but it will actually cost more (meter price as opposed to roll price). You could always put the leftovers up on eBay...
