77 240D Acceleration Problem

I have a 1977 240D that has a very bad acceleration problem. The car runs fine, but when you step on the accelerator pedal the car just creeps and very, very slowly builds up speed. The acceleration is like this through all of the gears, and is terrible when trying to climb any kind of grade. The car loses speed on a grade and just barely makes it to the top. Is this a fuel pressure problem, accelarator cable problem or ? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Update 09/21/06

I have found that the two fuel lines coming out of the tank are both leaking, they are both fuel soaked. The fuel filters have not been changed recently. I am assuming that with the lines leaking I am getting air into the fuel system, causing the car to starve for fuel. Is this correct? Also, are there newer upgraded fuel lines available, besides replacing with the cloth braided lines from the factory? Thanks so much for all your responses so far, I really appreciate it. I love this car and just want to get it in top running condition again!

Is this your first old diesel? I don't recall exactly, but I think it puts out about 80hp.

65 HP according to my database...
indeed sounds like a fuel filter problem.

That's a rocket compared to the 240D. Change the fuel filters as suggested, and hope for the best. Let us know if it helped.

I thought my eyes were deceiving me. It seems someone used the words "acceleration" and "240D" in the same sentence.

Fuel Lines

We recenlty replaced the fuel lines on our 79 300 CD - they too were fuel soaked and leaking. They were replaced with the new version of fuel line and are working great.

Check to make sure that when you push the pedal to the floor, it is actually opening the injection pump as far as it will go. There are bushings throughout the linkages that if worn or missing will not give you the full motion intended when the pedal is pressed.
