Limited Slip or Not? How to tell?

I'm working on my dad's 1974 240d (w115), 4 speed manual. According to the service manual, I'll need a different oil for the rear axle differential depending on whether it's limited slip. I don't like the idea of finding out by dumping the clutch so hard that I can spin the wheels with a little 4 cyl diesel. Is there a number or other ID on in the casting of the diff. case? Maybe it simply was standard or not available on this exact year/model/engine combination? Thanks.

Most limited slip rear ends have a tag on the fill plug. If not, then usually with both rear tires off the ground, rotating one by hand, you should see the opposite wheel rotate the same direction if it has limited slip. If it rotates the other direction it is not. The gear oil if I'm not mistaken is the same. You add an additive to the conventional oil to lubricate the clutches in a limited slip. I really doubt if it has limited slip.

I've never even heard of limited slip on a w115. I wouldn't give it a second thought...

I doubt if any 115 had limited slip, but if it does there will be a large flat metal tag on the back of the housing stating that.

If it has ,you CANNOT use ordinary Hipoid oil in the diff.
Check the cars option plate ( in front of the radiator,it's a small oblong plate with numbers stamped into it) .Generally it will be stamped as "211" or "256",
If those numbers appear on the plate then you a W115 with LSD,not uncommon in Europe where the snow and ice made it neccesary for taxis to have this option. As your car is a US car ,the number will appear because it would have to have been ordered especially with it.( IF it does indeed have the LSD)
Buy the special oil from a Mercedes parts dealer,no one else has it.
