I could use a bit of help, All of the sudden when I start my 1976 280C (W114) the key does not snap back from the "start" position to the "run" position. I have to manualy turn it back carefully, Too far and the engine shuts off, not far enough and the starter remains engaged. What part do I need to replace? Is it the ignition lock or the ignition switch? And how difficult will it be to replace the part? Also I'm looking for a set of "sport" springs for this car, As far as I can tell W123 springs should fit, Can anyone verify this?
Sounds like the switch- have your mechanic check it .Have it replaced before it goes completely and the car won't start; happened to me and I learned the hard way. doesn't take much to replace it if it's still functioning, albeit erratically.
Uh Oh, I never did replace the switch, I kinda got used to it...Then the other day I got in and started the car, I accidentaly let it die, When I went to restart it, NOTHING! No lights, no starter, zip, nada, nil! Checked the battery, And cleaned the terminals. It's fine, Tried to jump it, nothing...No head/tail lights, No interior lights, No hazzard lights, The only thing I can think of is the positive cable at the starter end is bad? Any help would be appreciated!
Well I figured out the problem with my car, The positive cable broke at the starter, $7 some bruised knuckles and about half an hour And all is well again, Until I moved to 7100 ft elevation! I'm slowly getting the carb and timing sorted out.
