Exclamation Screwed by Performance Products

Just thought I'd share a little "buyer beware" story that just cost me about $100:

Performance Products recently ran a sale where if you purchased a new AC compressor they included a new drier and expansion valve at no charge. Okay, not such a bad deal to get everything at one place plus there were some other things they had good prices on that I wanted for a few of the diesels. The car needing the compressor in the new '78 and it had been converted to an r134a breathing Sandin rotoary. So the sale page on Performance Products site had three pictures, a Sanden, York and R4. I chose the Sanden and placed the order. So the Big Brown Truck comes and I go through the package and find not a Sanden that I ordered but a York. Well, I then tried to navigate Performance Products labrythine voice prompt system and after about five minutes ended up with a sales person. I asked for "customer service" and he explained they didn't really have a customer service department, even though there's a number on the invoice and pretty catalog, but that he could help me. So I explained the issue and he gave me an return number for the York to ship back, at my expense, and that a Sanden would be right out to me again at my shipping expense. Well, it showed up yesterday and turned out to be an R4. So, back through the voice prompt system (only two minutes this time until encountering a human) and again related my dilemma, this time to be informed they don't even carry Sanden compressors. But I got a return number to ship back the R4, of course at my expense.

So now I've got to wait for about $600 dollars to be credited to my card from these highly efficient and motivated individuals and eat the shipping charges both ways. Oh, and for the Sanden? Got a brand new one from eBay with a 1 year warranty for $125.

Learned my lesson!

These crooks need to be made aware. They also screwed me over a steering wheel. Not only did they send the wrong one, it was used and damaged. They took it back and sent another wrong one. They also are using "bait and switch" tactics. Said wheel was supposed to come with a free shift knob that has been back ordered for three months! Yet, if you try to order just the knob, it is suddenly in stock. I filed a BBB and state of CA AG complaint about their shady practices this past week and I suggest everyone they have wronged to do the same. I wouldn't trust them and suggest we start a "hall of shame" thread for crooks like these!

To throw in the other side, I have used them for years and never had a single problem. They have provided many of the parts for the cars below and for a couple of Benzos before that. Also, I have bought from their truck section and always had good luck. Sometimes they are a bit more expensive but they have always had the parts and quickly got them to me.

Sorry you have had problems. That can be frustrating. You might ask to talk to a manager about crediting you some of the shipping.

I've had good luck wiht them too. But I usually wait until I am in the area and go to the store and buy over the counter.

It cuts down on "surprises."

I never had problems with them. Then again, it may have been one of those instances when something awefully bad becomes worse. I hope the store manager can fix it for you and compensate for whatever unnecessary expenses you had to deal with.

They've proven very difficult to deal with over the phone and the second representative I spoke with seemed very ignorant of MB products. As much as I'd love to recoup the shipping it simply isn't worth the frustration, especially since their west coast hours come at the busiest part of my work day.

This will be chalked up as a learning experience and I'm glad for public forums like this so others can deal with them better prepared than I was.

After having my car (plus parts) stolen, I found that because I paid for service and parts with my credit card, I was able to apply for a full refund. If you can't get things taken care of, or if you feel you've been screwed, go to your bank and do a chargeback. If enough people do this, the business will take note pretty quick.

Their Mercedes-Benz guy is named Daniel, and speaks with a French accent. He has always supplied me with great parts and service as well as a 15% discount because I belong to the MBCA. Sorry to hear of your problems - see if you can talk to him.

I didn't talk to Daniel in either of my calls to them. The first guy seemed to know what I was talking about, which really floored me when the second compressor was yet again incorrect.

In any case, I got both off to Performance Products via UPS with the proper RMA return numbers. If I get any hassle on the returns then I'll pursue through the credit card, which should be easy since I work for the bank it's issued through.

For the '78 300D this has all been about I picked up a new in the box Sanden SD508 with a one year warranty off eBay for $155. The next Performance Products catalog or sale flyer goes straight to the recycle bin!
