I've recently acquired a 1974, 450SL and have located a data plate on the radiator support frame with several rows of numbers, in addition to the vehicles VIN plate. I would like to restore this car and my question is, how do I know which of these numbers designates the color code of the car and what type or manufacturer of paint was used? My paint is badly oxidized and I would like to specify the correct color and type. I have searched in the manuals and there appears to be no reference to decoding these numbers. The present color is a medium, metallic blue which, I beleve, is original.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Paint code number

The third line of the plate reads as follows:

387H 387H M6

The existing paint color is a metallic, medium blue. Like an ocean blue. On my vintage BMW motorcycle, Glasurit paint product was used, and if I understand it correctly, it was an enamel of some kind. I don't know if this applies to MBz, however, but it would be nice to know who'se product was used.

Thanks for your help!

Sorry to revive this old thread but I have a question...

I see in the list posted that there are a lot of different "red" color codes. Is this a master list that encompasses old as well as new colors? An if these are every color ever painted on an MBZ then my question is...is there a way to find out (or does anyone know) what the available "red" color options were back in 1973 for a 450 SLC?

I discovered that my SLC started out in life as Astral Silver...but at some point was painted a "red". I want to get it repainted, but I'm not sure how difficult or feasible it would be to change it back to Astral Silver (pretty much everything except the engine bay was painted red). If I'm going to stick with the color red, then I would prefer an original shade of red.

Thank you in advance

I just came across a code 387 "Blue" 450SL on ebay. WOW this color is awesome, I haven't ever seen it anywhere. My 450SL was custom painted by PO to be a similar color, but probably not a Mercedes color. Always figured it was not very period correct, but looks like it's close. First pic is the code 387, second is my car.

Code 503 was for a mirror: "503 from 01.01.1963 to 31.03.1983 ” OUTSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR, ON THE LEFT” "

Maybe post all the numbers or a picture of the plate so we can help you decipher. The paint code number is usually followed by a G or H to indicate the paint manufacturer.
