What's it worth? 1972 Mercedes 250CE
This one is sitting by the side of the road on my way home with a "For Sale" sign on it. I stopped and looked at it a little this morning.
Here's what I know.
It's a 1972 Mercedes 250CE (most likely, the E is broken off the trim, but there clearly was another letter that broke off, and there's no other letter that could be there on a 1972 model). It's burgundy (maroon) in color. The rear bumper has been pushed in a bit and the left side tail light is broken and "repaired" with some red tape.
There's a bit of rust damage and pitting at the base of both C pillars. Someone has "repaired" this with some paint (and I hope some good rustproofing primer). The paint job looks like a bad brush job, but at least there's no bare metal showing and rusting further.
It has steel wheels with color matched hubcaps. All hubcaps are present, but they are showing some rusty spots on the outer rings.
The windows are rattling loose due to a lack of weather stripping in the front tracks. And the top of the windows has been rubbing funny on the trim at the roofline. Looks like it has power windows. Not sure if they still work.
There is no carpet on the floor inside. However, the seat upholstery looks nearly new (most likely the interior was reupholstered. The doors were both locked, so I couldn't look around inside or under the hood. The odometer appears to read 57,xxx miles but only has 5 digits. So it's probably 257,xxx or 357,xxx miles.
I'm guessing this has either a 2.5L or 2.8L engine, and it's probably fuel injected. Was Mercedes using CIS on the 1972 models? I'm very familiar with CIS, so that would be a plus for me at least.
There was no phone number, but it's parked in a driveway. Nobody was home when I was looking, so I don't have the price or any other details. I will post more as I learn more.
Obviously I don't plan on buying this without a very thorough inspection (unless the price is way cheap). But what's the price range for this vehicle in average or fair condition? And what things should I look at as potential problem areas on this model?
How difficult is it to find parts for 1972 Mercedes models?
Should I stop by and try to find the owner? Or leave my number on the door? Is this one I should make an offer on? Or should I avoid it due to age and condition? Is it a potential money pit? Or, if it has been fairly well maintained, could it make a decent daily driver?
Any advice very much appreciated.
