Deal or No Deal

I have been interested in doing a restoration on an old Mercedes for some time. I have never restored a car, but just spent the last five years building an airplane, so commitment and perseverence are not a problem for me.
I just saw a 1974 280C for sale in my area for $1500. I have not called the seller and don't know much about it. Probably still runs because of where I saw it.
Is this a good model for a total restoration and what major items would be a deal killer?
Also, what resources (books, publications, etc..) are out there for a Mercedes restoration project?
Any replies will be appreciated.

You didn't post your location. In CA 32-years old car would definitely need paint job and lot of old rubbers replaced.
In another states the paint might be gone with the metal under it, but rubber might last better in cold weather.
I think if the car you are looking at has no rust holes and the engine is still in decent condition it might be nice restoration project.
Beware of price difference. For my 83 model in the past engine mount cost $9, now looking for newer CV joint I am quoted $1100 and there is no aftermarket.

the 280C is a nice car. you will love the M110 engine, even with the solex 4a.

the floor, rockers and wheel wells are notorious rust areas. being a coupe gives it some collectability but it will be a while before it really appreciates. i had one for 10 years in which i restored the body including the areas mentioned above. good solid car but you will spend more money restoring then what its worth.
