280 SE 4.5 Exhaust System

Have any of you out there found a source for exhaust system components for this series other than the ones that come from Germany? With as much water vapor as this engine usually puts out, all the exhaust parts rust out fast, and it costs $1400-$1500 to replace them if the German ones are used. For all but a few exceptional vehicles, this represents anywhere from 15-25% of the value of the entire car. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Have you tried Midas? Other than the resonator and muffler, everything is just a pipe ... I paid tons of $$ for the res. and muff., but everything else was relatively cheap. Other than that, I could offer some websites, but you'd end up with the same $1400 and up prices ...

Well, I think I'm going to have to do just what you did. The pipes aren't that expensive compared to the muffler & resonator, so I might as well bite the bullet and go "all German". After going to many web sites myself, I don't think there's much hope for an inexpensive fix. It's too bad these 108s are so good but so old! Parts are getting mighty scarce.
Thanks,
Dave

It's a pity you are so far away from me,I have a brand new W108 4.5 Muffler that came with a 6.3 i have ,it's never been used and it would be free. I can't stand the souind of Stainless exhuasts with their tinny sound,so I use the steel mufflers whether Genuine parts or otherwise. Before I fit the mufflers I always do this.....
I buy a liter or two of POR15 black anti rust paint.
I block the ends of the muffler with duct tape and pour the paint into the muffler and then block the other ends ,then with the help of an assistant I rotate the muffler in any and every direction until I think I have completely covred the inside of the muffler.
I then hang the muffler from the ceiling rafter ( or engine crane) and let the excess paint run into a paint roller tray.
This excess is then used to paint the outside of the muffler and coat the insides of the pipes although it's not all that neccesary.
POR 15 won't burn because it has a temp rating far beyond the temp any muffler will reach.
I have had mufflers last for 4 years ( i have only been doing this for this period....) and thats a lot longer than I would expect a mild steel muffler to last on a merc.

COOOOOL!!! I'm going to do this when my 108's cancer reaches its colon! Fantastic idea! You would think that mufflers would be coated with something to prevent rust ...
