61 W111 Coupe Low Compression Eng

I just got my "Birth Certificate" from MB for my 1961 220SEb W111 Coupe. 42,000 original miles (actually 69,000 km's). A couple of interesting items noted in the original build spec:

Low compression engine 7.2:1
Suspension modified for poor roads
50 liter fuel tank

Car was originally ordered and sold in Argentina, them made it's way to Southern California in mid 60's. Car was fully resotred in mid 80's, except for the drivetrain, which has never been touched.

Does anyone know what Germany did to engines to lower the compression - is it just a matter of head deck height?

Since the car was in Argentina in the early 60's, I can understand the special ordering due to poor fuel quality and poor road paving.

Nice car,the driving lights are the same as I have on my 6.3 .
initially I thought the The engine you have is the same unit that was fitted to the Unimog S404(M180) but you have the M127? .The low compression is acheived by having a larger combustion chamber volume, you can tell the difference by measuring the thickness of the head on the outside.
To raise the compression get a head from a European ( or South African or Australasian ) delivered car.The cams are vastly different too,so using the low compression cam would be a retrograde step. There are several diffrent M127 cams which can be told apart by the numbers stamped on the rear.

Yes, my engine is a 127(.984?). I will be restoring the drivetrain within the next year or two and will definitely want to increase the HP. Could I not just shave the head to increase the HP? Obviously the cam issue would also need to be addressed. Not sure why I woudl have to get a different head, though.
