part identification please

MB rookie here. I'm working on a 280CE 110 engine. I've removed the water pump housing and found a small metal tube that is threaded into the water pump housing at the bottom and has threaded "eyeletes" on both ends. The tube is broken in the middle probably from rough handling by former owner. What is thie piece called and what is its function? Any help appreciated. I simply don't know what part to ask for from a parts dealer. Thanks
