Diesel Chain Drag?

I understand how irritating it is for people to describe car noises, especially when they are new to a forum, but this noise is really driving me nuts so please help. I recently bought a 75 240D and between 30-35 mph I intermittently hear what sounds like a chain dragging on the ground under the car. It’s not constant and its only during in that speed range in third gear. Now, I have obviously checked to make sure I'm not dragging any chains, but other than that I'm at a loss. I have never owned a diesel, so I'm wondering if this is a normal noise or if I should be worried. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would check all motor/transmission mounts, exhaust hangers, and driveshaft couplings and supports for looseness and excess wear. Sounds like you probably have some kind of funky vibrations going on at that speed that is aggrivating some other worn mount, causing metal to metal contact.

I had a sound in my 74 240D which sounded like a metal rattle. It turns out the exhaust system was loose as the hanger donuts were cracked so the exhaust system rattled from all the rusted metal in the resonator chamber so it sounded like a ton of pennies shaken in a can. The different engine speeds create different vibrations so it may just exhibit at 30-35mph. Rev the car in Neutral to see if you can duplicate the sound. Or when the engine is cold shake the exhaust system to see if it's loose and listen for squeaks or loose fittings.
