300 SEL 4.5 water pump removal

Without a manual, it appears that I will need to remove the distributor as well as many other pieces to replace the water pump (seized from non-use) on this A/C equipped model. Anyone else done this? Looks like a bear of a job. Any wise shortcuts would be appreciated!

I did this on my 72 280SEL 4.5 years ago. Removed fan blade and shroud, removed bolts holding small water pump to front of engine. Was necc to rotate crank pulley, if I recall, because there was a cut out on it to access lower bolts. I think I loosened the alternator to get belts off. I know for a fact, I did not pull the crank dampner off. My memory recalls it being rather easy, like replacing a water pump on an early 440 Chrysler. Mid 70's. My bearings had failed and the pump seized because the impeller was cocked over. It happened in of all places the local MB dealers parking lot! Called a tow truck and towed it to my house.

You should find procedure somewhere on this site. I'll give you some tips though. The previous poster was able to take advantage of holes in the balancer. That doesmn't always work. You may need to remove the balancer. If you do paint a line across the balancer and all the pulleys to mark them. Also you only remove the 6 bolts or so to remove the pulleys. You do not need to remove the 27mm bolt in the middle of the crankshaft. I've seen this mistake made often. You''l need a couple of pry bars to walk the balanced off the shaft. Good luck.
