Exclamation Souping up a '73 280SE 4.5

So, I've got my car at a body shop to finish a paint job, and ran into a guy who soups up cars for a living. In idle conversation, he mentioned that I should put a larger diameter exhaust system on my Benz, in order to allow it to exhale better, and thus, have better performance. Don't know how much it might cost yet, but it sounds like an interesting notion.

Anyone have tips or personal stories on how the 4.5 can be souped up? I've already got a Pertronix unit installed ...

I don't think there are many cost effecitve performance mods that can be made to the 4.5. I was built as a low compression emmission regulated engine. Some have installed 3.5 heads and cams to try and increase performance but I don't know how that would improve perforrmance. The 4.5 has dish top pistons to lower the compression and unless one installs flat top pistons you can't raise the CR.
I have read that altering the exhaust system may affect the D-Jectronic calibration since it uses manifold vacuum to regulate the injection pulse. If you have the means to recalibrate the system it might be a worthwhile project.
You might do some searching on the net for more info.
