A true 350SL has the model designation 107043 (the first 6 digits of the VIN) etc and a 450SL has the designation 107044. The 107043's were not brought to the USA but you'll sometimes find one, as they were grey market. I own a '75 model (same as '72) with the high compression 3.5 litre engine and 4 speed manual transmission. These produced 200 HP; the lower-compression 450SL brought to the USA for smog reasons produced 195 HP. The Euro 350SL is easy to spot by the flat headlights instead of sealed beams. M-B never brought manual trannny 107 SL's to the USA.
Don, I have a '72 350SL, but the VIN starts with 107044. Yes, there was a restoration done, and everything original was left intact, my Dad made sure of that. My Dad always told me that this was a "special" car, but never would tell me why. I would appreciate your input, as well as any others.
