New to Benz... need guru to guide me on my search.

Hi,

I just moved from Louisiana to Oregon (near albany) and im looking to get my wife an old benz. Ive never owned one but my grandfather and uncle did. They really liked them and the diesel engine ones seemed indestructable.

so what i really need is someone that can suggest particuliar models that are 1. dependable and 2. inexpensive.

I'll probably be sending you craigslist model numbers that are up for sale and get your opinion on them.

right now i see a 300sd for sale for 1000 that needs a new "timing chain". From my limited understanding it looks like an expensive operation. Can anyone tell me what it might roughtly cost?

Thanks,
Geekcomputing

btw, im an expert in computer hardware... so if you have any computer questions feel free to email me at geekcomputing @ yahoo.com

The lowest cost and cheapest to maintain will be the W123 chassis. The 240D the cheapest of those to maintain, however I would recomend the 82-85 300D Turbodiesel.

Fuel milage is better than the early 300D non-turbo. And only marginally worse than the 240D but with a lot more power.
