Sandy, we have a saying around here:
"There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes"

The only exception I know of being a cheap Rolls-Royce.

I'm pushed to contemplate anything more common than a Mercedes with a Ford motor.[xx(]

RE: 72 mercedes

I guess the real question is what condition all of the mechanicals are in, whether they are Ford or Mercedes? If someone replaced the drivetrain to ease service options and has paperwork and service records to backup all the work and all of the other mechanicals such as brakes and stuff then you have a car to start with. IF the car just needs cosmetics, you may have a project that will give you a nice car to tinker with, bring up on the cosmetics and enjoy.

Now if it needs both cosmetics and mechanicals, that is another story but some of these hybrids have been very well done and are nothing to avoid. Parts are very inexpensive for the motor/tranny and working on them is a breeze.

Just know what you are getting into before you buy.

RE: 72 mercedes

Well your husband is offering sound advice then.

Even if the car were in good shape, which it's not, where would you get it serviced? Ford people aren't gonna want to touch it, and Mercedes people won't get near it. Keep looking, and saving. One day you'll be glad you did [:)]

RE: 72 mercedes

My dad put a Ford 5.0 into a 280S. He spent thousands and many months on rebuilding the inline six original engine. Unfortunately, he spun a bearing shortly after buttoning everything back together, and it ended up trashing the engine. Ticked at the resultant repair bill, he found a kit and installed the Ford engine. Everyone cringes, but it would run circles around my 4.5

Given the car you want has no working gages, has rust, etc, I would stay away from it. I'm in the middle of de-rusting my own 280SE, and it's an ongoing issue!! It'll probably damned well kill me too.
