need help with pricing my 450SE...

(i posted this in the 116 forum as well)

i've been in a tight position financially lately and i've been exhausting every resource before even letting the thought of selling my car enter my mind.... i'm really hoping i can make it without resorting to selling it. i'm thinking of putting it on craigslist for a really high price and if i get some interest i'll take it. i really only drive to and from and the gas cost is killing me. i burn through 2 tanks of gas a week... almost $60 a fill... premium is getting near $3 a gallon again.

but anyways here's the details on the car:
1974 450SE w/ column shift.... in near showroom condition. 80k original miles. clean title. i'm the 2nd owner. leaks or burns no fluids. nothing mechanical wrong with it. every thing on the car is original. i run a detail shop so the car is polished with Menzerna's polish and waxed with Menzerna FMJ monthly. the interior is never dirty, i condition the leather and dash regularly. it was serviced at the mercedes benz dealership in La Jolla until 92'... and i have every single receipt to prove it. i have every manual for the car. i've owned the car since september and taken care of the car the way it deserves. that's all i can think of for now... literally the car is a 10. so tell me what you think.

I can't really comment on it's resale value where you are other than to point you to the link above.

Have you considered converting it to LPG fuel.
Older Mercs. take to it very well. The kit's (over here) are only a few hundred pounds. It's a simply conversion and they can be removed with little sign of one being fitted in the first place.
You'd have to look at availability of the gas and insurance but the fuel should be a lot cheaper than regular petrol.

LPG isn't as popular here and is pretty expensive. What's your other car? These cars are a bit heavy on gas, but should run well on regular gas (the compression is pretty low). They are also cheap to insure and tax.

It's hard to value these cars, unless someone really wants a D-Jet W116, you shouldn't expect a quick sale. Your best option is to look at what comparable cars are going for on EBay. I have seen a couple of early W116's go up recently.

Good luck and I hope you don't sell it. It maybe a good thing. The car is in great shape, I'm pretty sure it will stay that way if you keep it.

The link to the Mannheim price guide at the top of this forum has a 1974 450SE at $7,000 for a good one with up to $12,000 for a show car.

That car of yours looks an absolute belter. Hope you can keep it.

One in this condition sold in Nashville, Tennessee last month for $8,000. A re-paint, no rust and 78,000 miles. The A/C -heat system and the tranny are the weak points on this model. Nice car!
