can't find glow plugs for 1979 300cd

I've got the number off the glow plugs that are currently in it (217 059) and no one can look it up, I've got the vin #, no help there, so I wrote down the 3 different numbers that I found on or near the engine, and still can't figure out which glow plugs to get. It keeps asking for engine size, either
- 085945 or 12-085946 and I have no idea what that is since I've found no such numbers on the car...help!

I know how much they cost and where I can get them, I don't know which ones to get, because I don't know how to find out if I've got engine size - 085945 or 12-085946, it's not the turbo...

RE: can't find glow plugs for 1979 300cd

There are only two types of glow plugs for the W123 OM617 engines. One has a large hex and threads and will take something like a 17mm wrench to remove. It has an exposed wire loop as the heating element. The other is called a "pencil" style glow plug and is thin with a small hex head and takes something like a 10mm or 13mm wrench to remove it. It has an enclosed heating element which looks like a round rod. Your 1979 should have the larger loop style plugs unless the head or engine has been changed. The plugs were changed in the 1980 model year, so all engines with serial numbers ending in 12-085946 and higher will have the smaller pencil style plugs. Engines with number 12-085945 and lower have the larger loop style. The serial number is on the rear left corner of the engine block right below the cylinder head.
