RE: how old so u have to be

I think the cutoff for this very forum is reasonable.

1979 or before. Although, of course, some cars are more vintage than others [;)]

I'd class anything from before the fifties as vintage, and then anything from that time up to the eighties as classic.

How old does a car have to be to get Vintage plates?

Well, we're just throwing Classic and Vintage into one pot here for the purpose of discussion.

Classic is a subset of vintage. Both imply value though.

For the rest, yes, there's "old"...

Not to mention dated, decrepit, dilapidated, obsolete...

I believe it's 25+ years for classic and 75+ years for vintage.
In the UK cars used to be road-tax exempt and classed as 'historic' after 25 years. Now they use 1973 as the cut off date.

I can now list my car as an antique in my local paper..its only an 86 too

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.

My 240D is Under Historical, so when I got new Plates for my car it says Historical on the bottom of the plate, it makes feel special!
