'73 280SE 4.5 start/idle issues
I'm about at my wits end. I just bought a '73 280SE 4.5. The car doesn't like starting in cold weather, even after replacing the cold start injector. Additionally, it will sometimes start fine, and then just die, and only after a couple hours, it'll restart. Additionally, at other times, after idling for a while (even after starting and running normally), it'll sputter, almost die, idle like crud, and then run normally. And on still other times, the car will run fine and just ... blah itself out (power fades and then the car stalls). I have replaced the plugs and wires, and am about to replace the fuel injection points, I plan to install a Pertronix electronic ignition unit (to replace the ignition points), replace the fuel filter, and do general tuneup things (awaiting parts). Other than what I've listed, can anyone offer advice on what else to look at? How reliable are the computers?
I plan to drive the car from Colorado to California (I'm in the military) in Febuary 2006, and don't want to get myself stuck if the car dies in the middle of the Nevada wastelands...
