Dad's 1966 200D

My Dad is a bit of a pack rat. He has "saved" a 1966 200D in his garage for >20 yrs. He starts it once a month (I started it with him last week). He thinks he fried the alternator (mistakenly attached battery charger in reverse polarity). Car runs fine, but unidentified light (has "GL" underneath it) on instrument panel is on. This may be charging system light, but I'm not sure. I'd like to know before pulling the alternator. Can anyone direct me to legend for instrument panel for 1966 200D?
P.S. - He's moving out of the house, so if anyone is interested in buying a 200D, let me know.

Check out this site to identify the lights:

If it is the top red light, that is for the alternator. Could have fried a diode in the alternator, or it could be the regulator (as these models were externally regulated). If I remember right the regulator is located on the radiator support down in behind the fender.

Where's the car located?

I'm not near my 65 190d since visiting my in-laws but I do recall that in 65 they used a generator. If you see a red light glowing it could be the charging indicator; if its white - its the hand brake. The contacts in the regulator can get contaminated so cleaning them with a piece of paper and alcohol or a mild burnishing blade might solve your problem. TAn easy way to get an indication of what the light could be telling you is to put a voltmeter on the positive and negative battery connections and look at how many volts the alternator is putting out. If you see over 12.5 volts with the engine reving 1500 -2000rpm it would look good. Ideally it would be putting out 13.5 - 14.00 if your battery was really flat.
