For $1800 you would be getting a parts car and not a good one at that. If you are willing to put a bunch of money into a car that needs work then go for it and trust me it will take a big handful of $$$$$.
Should you choose to accept Mr. Phelps look for the following: the mechanicals-- does it run? suspension components-- if the car does run how does it handle. If it doesn't, are the springs, control arms, etc. rusted. Look for rust in the head light pots, the front wheel wells, front floor boards, rear wheel wells, the flares above the rear wheels and the trunk. Make sure the convertible top mechanism has all of the components. Look at the brightwork, the chrome and the anodized brightwork. You will be amazed at how expensive this stuff can be. To replace the grill on a 113 will cost you more than the asking price of this car.

If you are looking for a car that can be driven and is not a bucket of bolts, this probably is not going to fit the bill.

Yup -- $1800 is likely to buy you a bucket of bolts...

Well fellas, this is the third world and resale value of vintage cars is $hit.

I have always wanted a vintage Mercedes convertible so I have been looking around for cars in my area. A W111 (I think that was the number) in great condition, running and used as a weekend car by the owner went for $11,000. About two weeks later I saw a W107 hard-top in mint stock condition, and I do mean it, it was in the house of the German ambassador totally restored and given to him as a gift. His wife sold it for $9,000. So a $1800 230SL is probably in not in as bad condition as you may think. Here for car dealers the lower the year number the lower the price. PERIOD.

I have driven past the sellers house but have only seen a W129 and a W123.

I will report back as soon as I see it on monday.

I appreciate your replies and help.

Well, my visit to the owner turned out to be an appointment for several potential buyers that turned into an auction ending in $30,000. Sad thing though, it was bought by a car salesman who basically towed to his lot and placed a price tag of $35000.

Dream on...

Yeah, I'm afraid you're going to need a time machine in order to find a nice 113 for $1800.....

Well, a time machine will probably cost more than a fit W113!
