I ran into an old friend who has been storing a 1958 MB for another friend. This car is a diesel and is in running condition but that's all the info I have on it right now. They don't want to "hassle" with moving this car in and out of their garage anymore and want to sell it. I'm quite familiar with the W123 and W124's but unfortunately don't know much about these old beauties. Anyone familiar with the chassis number they used for a car of this age? They are going to call me tomorrow to give me a price to sell it and I'd like to get a little background info on it upfront. Thanks, Cyberbach

Yea these cars will last a million miles but what with terrorists, natural disasters and the H5N1 avian flu pandemic... God help us there's anyone left here to drive them.
Time for you to join the ponton group now. Go to http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ponton/ and sign up. We've got over 400 owners there and the knowledge base is incredible. Also snoop around on the Ponton Page, http://www.mbzponton.org/. Lots of good stuff there too.
I just got off the phone with the friend that wants to sell the car, she thinks it is a 1959 220S, I asked again if it was diesel but she said she thought it was gas. The driver’s side has been keyed but it had a nice black paint job, clean with no rust or dents. Someone made off with the front Mercedes Star and this gal is concerned it will be vandalized even further if she doesn't find a deserving home for it. She was going to look up the title and take some pictures for me tomorrow. I asked about price but she said she needs to talk to the previous owner first (another friend) because she bought it real cheap in consideration of storing it for the other friend. The interior she said was in pig skin leather and needs to be re-done. She also said it had a 5 speed transmission with the shift on the column (I feel it is probably more likely a 3 speed).
Now,..... why do they get referred to as Pontoons? Is it because they are as big as a boat? I would really like to find out more info on these cars, like the size of the engines and all those special things that made them special. Thanks for your help; I'll post more as I discover more, Cyberbach
