1960 220s engine options

trying to restore my girlfriends dad's old merc, engine ist kapput and wondered what options are available as an alternative. present engine is the 2.2lt mechanical injection, does the later 2.5lt efi engine fit the current gearbox and can I fit the mfi to it ? if not any information greatly appreciated. I am quite competent as a mechanic but don't know these cars well

RE: 1960 220s engine options

just thought I'd ask again as there has been a recent post on modern engine options, I'd like to keep the original gearbox but what engines will fit ?

Can't be a ponton unless it's year is wrong. The ponton 220S ended in 1959.

Thanks Len - I couldn't remember the cut-off.

With a finny a wide range of engines can be made to fit in the bay. The 250SE or 280SE straight-6s from the 70s would be pretty easy and more powerful. I'd avoid V configuration engines unless you wanted to do some major mods. The M189 is pricey, but would fit. M100 6.3s have been fitted before, also very pricey.

RE: 1960 220s engine options

thanks for all that, bit of a long story this one, the car belongs to my girlfriends dad who is now in a nursing home and is no longer 'knitting with both needles' so to speak. however he still think the old merc is up & running. don't know the state of the 2 engines with it except they are both 'knackered' the car has stood in a dry garage since 1978 and I was going to sell it for the family to get it out of the way,(and also to get my Marcos in their garage[:D]) after taking a good look at it, I thought, well it's a nice car and seems pretty solid considering it's age, and it is a fintail so maybe I could fix it up and get it running and take the old man for a spin before he moves to the great scrapyard in the sky. I'm already commited financially to various other projects so hoped to find a reasonably priced option to make it roadworthy. a more modern engine is seems a good provisional move, it has a manual tranmission with collumn change and I'd like to keep that if possible. what are my best options do you think ? also the ball linkage at the bottom of the collumn change has snapped off, is it possible to replace this without removing the entire mechanism [?]
