Clutch master rebuild

I have a 61 220SEb 111 coupe. I believe I need to rebuild my clutch master - depressing pedal will not disengage the clutch and I cannot shift into gear with engine running. With engine stopped, I can put the car in gear and bump start the engine and car moves, so it's not a tranny problem. I suspect my clutch seals are shot and fluid is backfilling around the clutch piston.

Has anyone rebuilt a clutch master? Any tricks?

RE: Clutch master rebuild

I haven't rebuilt a clutch MC. Are you certain the slave cylinder on the bell housing isn't the culprit? I also have a weak MC for my clutch. Replacing the slave helped enough so that it shifts well and disengages fully, but I have to get to the MC sometime myself. Best wishes.

RE: Clutch master rebuild

Hi, Al.

Kudos on keeping an old love alive. :)

Were it I, given the year I'd just rebuild both the master and the slave cylinders. I haven't rebuilt one on a benz but I can't imagine they'd be markedly different from any of the others I've done.

And if you've done a brake master cylinder and wheel cylinder rebuild then none of this will surprise you; it's very straight-forward. One note: if the slave has a threaded shaft you want to make sure to mark it/count the turns as that will be your starting point for any fine adjustments that may be needed.

Take care and enjoy the ride,

RE: Clutch master rebuild

are the master and slave rebuild kits readily available? Dealer only?

real engines don't have spark plugs

RE: Clutch master rebuild

Just rebuilt the master cylinder on a W110 body. Not difficult, and the only odd tool you need is a hone of some kind to clean the bore of the cylinder. I'd also check the slave cylinder first, as these are usually the culprit. But on the one I worked on, the rubber had swelled enough over the years to cover the return port to the reservoir, not letting fluid into the master cylinder.

Kits are getting harder to find, as everybody wants to sell complete master or slave cylinders. The dealer can still get kits with a little searching. The master cylinder kit I got from the dealer was around $35. The slave kit seems a little easier to get.
