The past few days I have been driving with the generator light coming on and off intermittently. I cleaned grime from the connection to the voltage regulator and decided to have a go at the alternator as well. I removed it and cleaned it up really nice and replaced it and the light has not come on since.
Now that I have gotten my hands dirty (I would consider myself to be below novice when it came to cars) I decided to pull the alternator apart over the long weekend and have a look at the brushes and what-not. I have removed every nut and bolt that I can see holding it together but it now just spins and wont come apart. Any tips as to what I am missing? And if my brushes are worn would they most likely be available at the local auto shop? Any help would be appreciated, I would really like to give this a go for myself.

RE: Alternator

The brushes likely won't be stocked at the local auto store, but they can order them for you, or you can find them on the internet somewhere. Do you have the pulley off of the alternator? Not sure if it has to be removed or not. Lightly tap around the "joint" where the alternator splits apart and then see if that doesn't loosen it.
