1971 300sel

I'm usually in the 123 post...mostly for my 2 1983s 300td. Lately I've been looking at a particular 1971 300sel 4.5 - "dead" for the last 6 months. Symptoms - choke stays on even after warm up period - resulting in stalling engine and black smoke coming out. Also,...of course, since it's been sitting for 6 months, the front wheels are all the way down. No rust. Is this a car worth $500. Sorry, I'm a diesel fan but I love the look of the 109 series also.

Just wanted to ask you folks. Thanks.

For $500, you can part it out and do just fine.

Exactly, you could get that the fenders alone if they're nice.

RE: 1971 300sel

I'm not looking to buy this 300sel to part out, I'm looking at hopefully making it a part time driver....but however, I'm new to this post and won't know if it's really true, it's a money pit like a few have said....or if they are truly going to be a collectable. This is a 4.5 engine....but the engine was swapped with a wrecked one a few years ago. Looking to see if it's better off as a parts car or restorable. Thanks.

Well, let's see some pics, but, yes, these are money pits. Just the air suspesion could set you back numerous thousands to rebuild.

RE: 1971 300sel

Wow, it's definitely not like the 123's where parts are readily available.

Oh, they are available just fine. Just a lot pricier.

For suspension help etc go to the m-100 site at www.M-100.cc ,but 4.5's are fuel injected and DO NOT have a choke,They are electronic Djetronic .If it is running rich it can be : leaking starting injector, blocked aircleaner, fualty water temp sensor,Fuel pressure regulator set too high or fuel return pipe to and In the fuel tank blocked,Manifold air pressure sensor diaphram ruptured, throttle position switch out of adjustment or soe one has turned the idle control on the ECU .

Thanks for the information Mercmad and the rest! I'm just going to wait to see what the seller wants to do. No reply yet...probably sold to a chop shop.
