RE: Something I've Never Seen.

I'd be a little concerned about the rigidity of this car because of the conversion. The 250C roof, along with the A- and C-pillars, adds a LOT of strength and stiffness without a lot of weight. That's why convertibles are usually heavier than their otherwise-identical hardtop counterparts - to make up for the lost strength and stiffness from not having a roof, the factory has to add extra reinforcement in the doors and elsewhere in the chassis.

I'm also not sure where he's getting the "400 pound" weight savings from losing the roof. I would guess that the roof, pillars, and rear window would probably only add up to about a third of that amount, or maybe half at the most.

And I won't even go into the metalflake paint...

RE: Something I've Never Seen.

That thing is going to go down the road like a piece of underdone linguine. Without any additional bracing underneath, a hardtop coupe has no backbone. After a short while, you'll have to do a "Dukes of Hazzard" entry and exit, as the doors will no longer open or close properly. Good luck to that guy. Hope he has welding skills. [:D]

RE: Something I've Never Seen.

The 114 coupe sans top is strikingly attractive, almost modern. As noted above, however, unless some sort of reinforcement was used the integrity of the chassis is severely compromised. The faux ragtop boot/cover and cheap looking flake finish are just bizarre.

RE: Something I've Never Seen.

This a real common thing to do to the 114 coupe,in fact they were doing it when the cars were new because Mercedes had stopped making cabriolets with the 280SEc 3.5(W111) and people still wanted a convert,no matter what.Heres one for sale in Australia.

RE: Something I've Never Seen.

This car is crap - it's loose as heck and NOT what's advertised. Going over railroad tracks and medium bumps, the whole car twisted and groaned.

I hope the new owner got a good deal.

The man who used to own it, Mike Medill, is a thief. I hired him to restore my W111, and he disappeared with my car, my $$ (about $13,000 worth), and extra parts I bought.
