1974 240D - Help?

Hi, I just acquired a 1974 240D and know very little about it. Can anyone direct me to a good online source of 'How-To' general maintenance tips for this car (ideally with images)?

My primary problem is I don't know how things should be and therefore don't know what to research to repair or what to address regarding preventative maintenance.

Of instant concern to me is the air filter - mine seems to be dripping with oil. This seems very wrong but I don't know enough about cars to know why it would be this way or how to fix it.

The car is an automatic and it seems to lurch into gear - thoughts, comments?

Any suggestions of where to turn? My local library was a tad disappointing.

RE: 1974 240D - Help?

You needn't worry. All the info you need can be found on the internet. This forum and www.mercedesshop.com are both excellent forums, though mercedesshop has a higher membership (though that doesn't guarantee anything lol). I'm most familiar with mercedesshop.com so I'd say to go there and in their search engine type in "240d basic maintenance" and go from there. My email is rfmurry@gmail.com. Feel free to email any questions you have, such as, should the air filter be dripping oil, which the answer is "no", unless you have an oil bath oil filter which I have on my 220d. Enjoy yourself and the sense of self accmplishment you will have from maintaining and repairing your car. And, yes, as a matter of course you should change all fluids and all filters, make sure the battery is good and connections are corrosion-free. That give's you a good baseline to start from.

You can also find a lot of info at http://mbca.cartama.net
Service and repair manuals may be found at
http://mb.braingears.com

Just be sure to find info particular to your chassis I believe you would have a W114 or W115 chassis. You will find a lot of info on the W123 chassis which is not quite the same as what you have.

If you need any help either pm me or e-mail me at paul.licata@l-square.com.
