Aftermarket ignition boxes on vintage Benz?
I'm still trying to fix a hot-starting problem on my '72 250C. It starts fine when cold, but it takes a while to start when it's hot (about five or ten seconds). It idles and drives fine.
The changes from stock are:
1) Two new Weber 32/36 carbs
2) New Mallory electronic distributor
3) Timing is 11 degrees more advanced than stock (7 deg BTDC instead of 4 degrees ATDC. It runs stronger with the extra advance, my fuel economy is a little better, and I'm not getting any pinging.
I just had a full tune-up done - (cap, rotor, plugs, wires, compression check, sync carbs, adjust mixture and idle).
I'm still using the stock coil and ballast resistor, though. I'm considering going with an aftermarket ignition box, like the MSD 6A I have on my Dodge Charger, and a higher-voltage coil as well. One of the benefits is supposed to be easier starting, but I didn't have starting problems with my Charger before doing the swap on it, so I don't have any first-hand evidence.
Has anyone ever used one of the performance ignition boxes/coils on their car? Any noticeable differences after the install?
