Power brakes out- 1975 230

The original rubber all over my 1975 230 seems to have perished in the tropical heat. Just replaced the bearing covers on one axle, but more problematic is the probable rupture of the diaphragm in the booster brake assembly. The brakes hiss with no power on application, while the massive suction of air from the engine results in a disturbingly violent judder. Does anyone know where it is possible to obtain a replacement diaphragm? All the local experts recommend buying a used power brake assembly, although it seems to me that a new diaphragm would be a better idea, as a used unit is difficult to source, and may pack up as fast as this one did... Does anyone have experience of dismantling the assembly? Haven't tried it yet, but perhaps just the valve is stuck, so it may be worth a look...

Thanks in advance for any tips you can offer!

The ealier Boosters were able to be dismantled ,but yours is the later type and there are NO parts available to repair.
You can buy a used ,tested booster from here in Brisbane ,Australia and the firm concerned will send it to you,I think POST is possible because the booster shouildn't be heavy.(25KG limit)
As you would know,a lot of stuff goes to Thailand from here.

RE: Power brakes out- 1975 230

Thanks for the tip MercMad! Thailand is actually the second biggest consumer of Mercs outside the Fatherland, and I should be able to track down an old wreck here somehow. I seem to recall seeing a 230 in a breaker's yard in Hat Yai, in the deep south...just have to brave the gun-toting terrorists to get there... Have some contacts in Bangkok who can source used parts, but wanted to take a swing at fixing my unit. Perhaps I'll dissect it anyway, once I've replaced it. Any thoughts on the theory of disconnecting the air intake line from the engine?

Gun toting terrorists[:0][:0]!!
Sounds like a good advert for your resort
I was thinking during the week about your shuddering and was wondering if it is fact the "flex Disc " on the back of the trans,it's the rubber disc on the drive shaft. If there are any cracks at all ,it's shot.
This will make the vibrate as you move off,as it wears the vibration gets worse until the car really shakes.
Also ,any 114/115 Booster will fit, they are all the same in your year range.Just don't forget that seal i mentioned above.
