Normally I'm leery of retrofit wheels, but I think these BBS wheels complement the car pretty well. With the new paint job it's gonna be a knockout!
Thanks! Yes a paintjob must be done to get the car look good again.[:I]

Yes i think the wheels is more "right" on my -85 w123. The rims are "80´s" rims also, i know.

The best rims for a w108 maybe is the 15" baroquerims.
yes a definite 80's retro look.... you hit the nail on the head there.

RE: 16" BBS on W108 (pictures)

The reason the dark blue 6.3 has those RIAL rims on it was because they fitted when the car was almost new.
They suit the style of car because they were styled "back in the day" unlike the highly polisherd PIMP wheels around now.
I have a set of ///AMG pentas ,and like the Rials, are 16x7 .14" wheels might suit the concours crowd but a lot of the M-100 owners i know are changing over bewcause you cannot get VR rated tyres anymore in a 14" size that suits a 6.3 or 6.9.And you would be extremely foolish to drive on anything less.

RE: 16" BBS on W108 (pictures)

Sure, the dark Blue car belongs to a freind of mine in Africa ( car is in France!)and is a 300 SEL 6.3.
When new,the 300SEL 6.3 came equiped with 14x185 VR rated tyres.
These are good for speeds in excess of 200KPH,the top speed of the 6.3 is 230KPH.
So you would not fit H or HR rated tyres on to a car that heavy and can go so fast.
The same applies t the W116 450SEL 6.9.
A very fast heavy car .
But they both came with 14" tyres, and today NO one makes a good tyre in VR rating in 14".
15" wheels have been available from Daimler Benz since at least 1951,and were offered in 1968 as an option for the 6.3 but at that time there were not any 15" VR tyres available. The 15" baroque ( or as the americans call them ...BUNDT) wheels came out in the mid to late 1970's and are very rare and expensive.i would expect to pay at least $1000 each here in Australia.
THe only 15" VR available in 1968-69 were Dunlop or Avon racing tyres and they were too wide.
So....today,we m-100 owners who like a bit of hard driving fit 15" or 16" wheels with yokohama or similar VR or higher rated tyres in the interests of safety.
We always look for early style rims such as Rial,BBS,///AMG ,ATS or similar brands from the late sixties or early 70's.
I have seen ///AMG pentas on the German eBay site and the prices seem to be OK but the problem is getting the germans to bend a little and sell outside germany!.
This is one solution used by ///AMG in 1970 to overvcome the lack of good tyres..[:D]

The 6.3s came equipped with 195VR14 or 205/70VR14

It is "only" 220 Km per hour

205/70VR14 Michelin XWX are STILL available, not cheap though.

So it's still possible to keep your W108 or 109 stock
with the appropriate tires. IMHO no need to put
"bling bling" wheels on these gorgeous cars.

Thats OK, But like i said.... if you are into the concours or Poseing scene...,I'm not,the 6.3 was built for one purpose only,to provide a high speed point to point Luxury express for busy people in a hurry to make lots of money.
So the fitting of more modern tires is more important than what the car looked like in 1969.
Also ,the creator of the 6.3 ,Eric Waxenburger is also of this opinion .After all it was he who snuck the first M-100 into the 109 body to create the 109-018 .
But back to the topic,I stand by what I said ealier about the size of the tires fitted to the 6.3 (i can tell this by walking out to the workshop and looking at a 6.3) [:)] But what i should have said was 195 not 185 size tires.
These were superceded in late 1968 with "215 /70 VR14 " tires not 205.
VR rating was originally rated at over 210kms per hour.
Michelins were NEVER EVER fitted by Daimler Benz to any 6.3 .They were all Dunlop SP,(or labelled Aqua jet in some markets)Again I know this by simply looking at the unused spare in mine (6.3 #1675).
There is no way i would trust Michelins in todays traffic at the speed a 6.3 can move at which is why I would reccomend any one with a 6.3 or 6.9 to get rid of last centuries 14" wheels and fit some good tires.
Heres a page from the 1968 workshop manual for 6.3's on the size of tires required.

Hi,

maybe Mercedes used a different tire size for the export markets.
For the german market they specified 195VR14 or
205/70VR14
http://www.dbdepot.de/bilder/service/dtb109_63.gif

I am aware that Mercedes never fitted Michelins to the W109, but that's the only original size tire in VR rating still available.
I remember going "pedal to the metal" in BMWs, Mercedes or Porsches equipped with XWXs in the 70s.
Best regards
Hans
