Buying a '79 450SL, please help figure out the fair price.

I am about to purchase a '79 450SL with 108K miles and only one previous owner. The car is in great condition inside and out. No rust. It has been well taken care of and maintained. It still has the original stereo!!!. I noticed that unlike other late 450s this one has a wooden steering wheel, was that an option? The colors are Light Brown on Light Brown. As much as I have researched those models I can not find a way to pin point a fair price for the car. Please help me figure out the fair deal. If I act soon I can get this 450 for $9000. Thank you all for your input.

RE: Buying a '79 450SL, please help figure out the fair price.

Go to eBay and look at the completed auctions for 450SL's in that age range. There are currently about 60 completed auctions to look at for cars between 1976 and 1980.

$9000 seems like a good price for a clean one. From the completed auctions, it appears that the owners think more highly of them than the bidders - there are quite a few that were "reserve not met", even at $10,000+.

For that price, as long as the body is straight, the paint is good, and the car is clean overall, the only other things I'd really want would be the optional hardtop and at least some service records.

Not sure about a "fair price", but I can tell you that the steering wheel is an aftermarket replacement, probably a Nardi, since they were quite popular in those days.

as far as price, the only way to know is to have an MB dealer or knowledgeable shop look it over. These cars are beautiful - I fell for mine (76 450sl) without knowing about the telltale signs of a worn right camshaft. I'm still happy, but a dealer can tell you a lot more than we can about this specific car.
I'd say $9000 is OK - not a great deal, but good, if it is a clean car.
The 1-owner history is a plus, if there are service records.

Rscott,
How do you check completed auctions on e-bay if you didn't have them on your watch list???

Thanks, Vilius

Do a search, and then when the search results come up (showing current auctions), check the "show completed auctions" box on the left side of the screen under "search options", and then click "show items".

Or, from the eBay home page, click the "Advanced Search" link under the "Search" button - one of the advanced choices is "completed auctions only".

You do have to have an eBay login to view completed auctions, but it's free to sign up to eBay.
