Need insight on a Barn Find - 1958 180b diesel
I just ran across the opportunity (?) to pick up a 1958 180b diesel with a truckload of spare parts. There is some surface rust on the body and on the underside, but it appears that the frame is solid. Inside the wheel wells and the trunk is in good shape. Some rust on the floor pans, but no holes.
Apparently has about 110k miles on it. The motor runs, the car drives. The trans linkage from the column shift needs work, but it appears that the trans works.
Interior is usable. Carpets are gone, as is the head liner. The seats and door panels are in pretty decent shape.
It appears that all the parts are there.
Spares include two engines (one gas, one diesel) about 6 doors, a couple rear axels, front and rear glass in perfect shape, misc fenders, a couple hoods and one or two trunk lids, a grill, and a half dozen wheels with hub caps.
I can pick up the whole pile for $350.
I figure the worst case would be terminal rust underneath. In that case, I can part it out on eBay and probably make some money. (Heck, it still has the original radio in it. If that works, its probably worth half of what I'm paying for everything).
Best case would be to get it safe for the street (it was driveable 2 months ago) and turn it into a Veggie oil mobile.
I'm going back tomorrow morning with a jack and a flashlight and really poke around.
