Concidering a 1968 250

Hi Everyone,

I have come across a very nice example of a 1968 250 with 87,000 original miles. I don't think it's the large S-class, but it's a smaller four door sedan. I'm unfamiliar with the older Mercs, so what sould I look out for when I inspect and test drive it? Also, what's the chasis number for this model? It's the light, pale yellow color with no rust or dents at all. It looks like it could be a fun, enjoyable car to cruise around in! Thanks for any information!

RE: Concidering a 1968 250

If it’s a 68 that would be a 114 chassis car with the M114 inline six with carbs, it was imported to the US from 68 to 72. I’d have a mechanic put it on a lift and give it a good look, rust, rust, and more rust would be the issue. Have a compression test done on the engine and check the condition of the carbs.

An aggressive ppi is – imo – the only way to buy a car this old you are not familiar with.

I'll have a mechanic check it out. I looked over the entire body of the car again, and there is not one spec of rust to be found, even under the car, or in the door jams. It has "Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood" licence plate frames on it, so I'm assuming it might be from California, which could be the reason for the lack of rust. If all turns out good with the mechanic, what would a reasonable price be? It appears to be almost perfect, in and out. 0 rust. Not sure how it drives yet, but by the condition of the vehicle, I'm guessing it's going to run great.

The car is located about 30 min. away, and I'm not sure if the owner would like me taking pictures of the car before purchasing it. I'll try when I look at it later on this week.

Yeah, I'm sure he'd hate to give his car more exposure. Why would he want it on a website that gets 21 million hits a month? What was I thinking?

RE: Concidering a 1968 250

flyboyike - I didn't mean it like that. Naturally, this would be a great place for the vehicle to get exposure. What I meant by the owner (little old lady) not wanting me to take pictures of it before I possibly make the purchase would be the thought of "mis-using" them, such as listing the pics on eBay without actually selling the item. Do you get what I'm saying now? I'm going to check out the vehicle on Thursday, and I'll post how it goes. I've always liked the looks of the 60's sedans. I'm getting a bit excited.

Me too. Talk her into letting you take some pics. It probably looks something like this.
