Hah, bet that got your attention. Anyway, i was wondering if it would be ok to paint the air filter cover on a 72 350sl. I would use high Temp black spray paint, the kind they use on cooking grills (as opposed to car grills) . The cover has a few small surface rust spots and its been bothering me (i would sand it first). thanks
You don't even have to use hi-temp paint if you don't want to (although you may as well, since there are plenty of hi-temp paints available in black).
Typical automotive basecoat/clearcoat paints will survive just fine on an air filter cover. As a matter of fact, most of them are stable up to 400-500F and can even be used on the engine block itself.
Funny you mentioned this as i just did mine a couple weeks back...Turned out great! I sanded down the rust, then applied naval jelly to eat the light surface rust. After that, i then applied a very light coat of self-etching primer to the areas that were rusty, then followed up with a flat black high temp engine paint. sweeeeet![:0]
I painted mine today, after getting the first response (thanks by the way). I figured it would be safe, seeing at the filter doesnt get that hot (just wanted to check). I think it really looks nice; before i painted it, i used a wire brush on a drill press to remove 1/3 of the paint, and all of the rust, i think the new paint will look nice for a long time... i hope.. but now, the intake "tube" doesnt look as nice, so, i think ill do that next. It about time to put the car away for the winter, tomorrow will be the last ride of the summer.... [:(]

Until it snows my friend. A convertable while the leaves are turning colors along Lake forest area would be smashing! Im taking my 450sl there to visit my sister at school and much looking forward to the trip. I find these to be the more useful months for all three ways we can drive our wonderful 107's![:0][:0] Come on captain, give er a few more turns. As for driving it more, I am back in school (I'm 19, Sophmore at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Electrical engineering majoy) and must focus, enough shiny objects around.... heh. I pretty much live in downtown chicago, I am right on the lake and a 5 minute drive (north) from the loop. As for joining the R107 group, i am always reading the posts there have posted a few times, along with the W463 (G class) group. What year is your 450sl? i believe we would have the same engine, even though i am badged 350sl, it has the 4.5L V8 (only in 72).
