I'd like to get a new key for my 1972 250C by ordering one using the key code, rather than copying my existing key, which is getting a little worn.
Looking at the original data cards, Box 24H ("Hauptschlussel") appears to be the master key code. Will a Mercedes dealership still be able to make me a new key from that code, or will I have to go to a specialty locksmith?
Also, block 25N ("Nebenschlussel") appears to be where the code for the valet key would go, but there's nothing there. Can a valet key be cut if the locksmith knows the code for the master key?
The master key code was on the data cards that I got with all of the original paperwork. There were two cards, one buff-coloured and one pink. The pink card is the one with the key code on it - it's in block 24. The buff-coloured card is meant to be kept in the car, so for security purposes, the key code isn't on it.
I think you might be able to get a copy of the data card if you present your VIN and registration card to a Mercedes dealership, but I'm not positive about that.
I went to the dealer today - $90 total for two new master keys and one valet key. All they needed was the VIN, and the keys should be in on Monday or Tuesday.
Of course, the joke's going to be on me if the lock cylinders have been replaced sometime in the last 33 years. I guess we'll see when the keys arrive.
MBUSA will generate a "build card" for you if you request one for your VIN. They will even fax it to you.
Its the one relatively inexpensive thing I've found in the world MB....
Its free.

Do you have an address or phone number for this service? I already have both of my build cards, but I recall someone saying that MBUSA can also send a copy of the original window sticker, which I don't have.
