RE: Vintage MB owners' average age?
I'm 24, had an '83 380SEL as a first car because we couldn't afford another car (and I couldn't find that Trans Am I wanted[:(] ) and that one was just sitting there. Had 168XXX miles on it, original timing chain, was beat to hell, father bought it through his shop for around $2000, and I drove it. Did the best I could to keep it going. When I changed the valve cover gaskets, I could place my fist (vertically) between the timing chain and the guides and it still ran hard. It went through two transmissions. I was pulling out the second one when my father said to just donate it and be done with it. Was sad to see it go, just because it was a tank, but realize it was the wrong car for me. Had 18XXXX miles when it was donated.
The 280C was acquired reluctantly through a series of events that would take too long to explain. Car just sat for the time that we had it. Truck got totalled last year, been driving my van and needed another project to build up. This one was there, so I've been going at it.....boy do I miss our old Mustang and any old Chevy I could get my hands on......prices/parts/rust are killing me!!!!
This car is full of surprises, though, especially for the year. Caliper design, 4-wheel discs, vacuum system for the seat backs, safety all over the place, independent suspension, and great handling, etc. And it's fun to drive.....when I know it'll stop! [:p]
