I pulled the intake manifold off today and am confused by the injectors. The injectors going to cylinders 1,2 and 5,6 point toward the engine (you can see the tips right at the end of the manifold). However, the injectors for cylinders 3,4 are pointing away from the engine. This doesn't make sense to me.
None of my books go into detail about installing the injectors.
There is alot wrong there!![:0]
All the injector nozzles must point into the valve chamber from the head.
If you undo the two 10 mm nuts holding the bakelite peice in place the injectors will come out.what is really inportant is that the bakelite holder is not broken.there are paer gaskets in there,I make my own so I have no idea at all if MB still carry them but i imagine they would.
Get the injectors ultrasonically cleaned. They don't come apart so don't try!.
They are actually valves that are designed to pop off at a preset pressure.
The lines from the injector pump must never be mixed up and the injectors should always be kept in the order they came off the car because they are matched in the factory to give the same amount of fuel to each block..But it sounds to me like some fool has mixed them up anyway.
The opening pressure is 13.0 to 15.5 ATM ,(1 ATM =14.7 psi)
They are numbered "123" -"456" ,the lines from the pump must be fixed as the front pipe to 123 and the back pipe to 456.
there is LOT to learn about the MFI ,your best bet would be to track down a Daimler Benz workshop manual for the 220 SEb ,they start from 1958 and were current to 1968.the section you want is " 00-15/1 to 0018/3 "
This is the manifold. Note that the middle injectors are not visible because they are facing away.
Here's a close up.
Here's a close up of one I believe is correct.
Here's a close up of the one that is wrong. The injecters are in there, but they are pointing backwards.
This is the bakelite. Note that it is in two parts. The 10mm nut holds the top piece on. The bottom piece is held on with two allen nuts.
This is with the top bakelite piece removed.
Lifting the bottom piece. Note that the stud that the 10mm nut was on does not allow me enough space to curve the injector tubes out of the holes.
It appears to me that I need to remove the stud from the manifold before I can take the injectors out. I then need to put them back facing the correct direction and bolt everything back together.
The injectors should push out of the bakelite housing,so you won't need to try and remove the stud, which i can promise you ,will be very difficult, they are usually corroded in.

As for the backwards injectors...I am astounded!!!![:D]
I'll guarentee that your Merc will feel like a million dollars when you fire it up again!,the 3&4 cylinders must have been runnning ragged because the fuel would have condensed from the atomised conditon before it could be drawn into the cylinders.
I wiggled them and they came right out. Turned them around and they went right in.
I am anxious to see how she runs. There was always a hesitation when first hitting the gas. I had gone through EVERYTHING trying to get rid of it. Went through everything on the electrical side of the equation. I had actually reached a point where I thought it was acceptable.
I know everything else is right, so this thing should sing when I get it back together.
