Differences in Chassis

Hi Everyone,

I'm just popping in from the Gwagen forum and hope that you may be able to answer a couple of questions about classic Merc sedans.

I'm thinking about purchasing a 60's or 70's era sedan but don't really know the merits and/or differences of the different chassis.

Asthetically I'm very interested in W108, W109, W110, W111, W112, W114, and W115 models. Besides engines, what are the differences in these cars?

Likewise I've driven W116, W123, and W126 cars (but not older models), so I'd be interested to hear comparisons between the generations.

RE: Differences in Chassis

I'm new to the old stuff as well but what i have managed to find out so far is the 114 & W115's are the same car, the 115's are diesel and the smaller (4 cyl) engines, and the 114's are the more powerful cars (6cyls)

But i could be wrong....

RE: Differences in Chassis

In terms of bang for your buck, my preference would be a W114, specifically a 280C. A beautiful, elegant car that has value and shouldn't require a second mortgage to restore and/or maintain. The one to avoid one your list is a W112 -- definitely not a project for beginners.
