I just got off the phone with my dealer and he seems to think it's basically a multi-purpose relay that controls a number of circuits. This would be confirmed by its location (on the W123, the fender houses a box of 6 separate relays,where you just have that one big one) and the fact that it has 8 plugs. The description in his system reads "relay box". He quoted me $226.80 and said they would have to order one form Germany as there are none in the country and that it would take about a week to get it in.
