Yet another newbie - potential buyer... 240D

I'm seriously considering the purchase of a '78 240D with a blown head gasket. The paint is VERY oxidized, but the body is fantastic and the interior is even better. With 15min and some Armor All, you'd think it was new. The car sounds good and drives nice but has NO power. Could the head gasket problem be causing enough compression loss to cause this? It's been sitting for 6-9 mos so a fuel filter might help as well.

Your thoughts?

Is $500 a good deal?

What am I looking at to have the head gasket replaced?

Where do you live?

$500 id ann OK deal. How is the interior and what options does it have? Is it a stick?

How do you know the head gasket is blown?

Usually, a "normal" Mercede sshop charges about $1100 or so. I sually charge $700 on a 240D, but that's just me. Too bad you aren't in florida, or i would come and look at it for you for free.

I think you could find one running though for about 41600 in good conditon, and if you need a ruynner, well, don't look at vehicles with blown head gaskets.

There is a fully functional '78 240D down here, in rusty conditon, but running, for five hundred dollars.

The interior is perfect, as is the body with the exception of oxidized paint.

I plan for it to be a daily driver, but at $500 it's hard to pass up with the interior and body so fantastic.

As I said to newbie, I dont think the 240 D had any oomph at all. Very sluggish. our 1976 is sitting in our driveway with the floor rusting out in North Delta b.c. Canada The engine does fire up. Too bad Iam afraid to sit in it in case the floor gives way. Good Stainless steel bits on it mind you. [8D] I loved my 280E automatic its sitting there as well needing a new engine covered in dust. Driving in that felt so safe during winter months.[:(]

I thought $500 dollars was a deal to good to pass up on my 114, now a few years later I am still restoring it. If you have the time and money to put into it, and truely like the car then go for it. [:)]

a 240 D runs forever...buy it, thats a good price, these cars prices are shooting through the roof, as they become classics, and everyone wants good fuel mileage...

it has a clogged tank screen, clogged fuel filters, and needs some diesel purge done to it.....and a new air filter, and spray the intake (while open, changing air filter) with some seafoam brand spray, from autozone.....

it should rock...

also, change all the fluids.....

Good body, good interior -- that's all that really matters -- the rest is negotiable. I agree -- you'd be nuts to pass it up.
