RE: 6.3 tune up and timng without emissions
Timing on a 6.3 is very critical if you want to get all the performance. One thing is more important than any thing else though.
Replace the timing chain.Ensure the MFI is timed correctly, ensure the tensioner rails are in good conditon and the tensioner is working properly.
I feel the crane firebasll is actually pretty primitive and the absolute best for a m-100 engine like the 6.3 is the pertronix ignitor, just fit it set the ignition timing and forget it.Do not under any circumstances remove any temp sensors for the MFI,the pumps are $15,000 NEW and unobtainable second hand.As a mechanical set up ,the injection works great but it relies on the various temp sensors to work and meter the fuel properly.
Actual ignition timing depends on what model distributor you have.
It is set at 3000 rpm and number 1 cylnder is 26 degrees BEFORE TOP DEAD CENTER without vacuum, number 5 must BE 64 degrees AFTER TOP DEAD CENTER.
Although you must set the timing according to exactly what model distributor you are running.
