Can you put a 300D 5-speed in a 77 240D

Hi, I've looked this up several times and never found an exact answer. Here are my questions:

Can you put a similar year (77-79) 300D 5speed into the 240D?

If so, does it require swapping other parts of the drivetrain?

If it is better to put a Euro 240D 5speed in, where can I get one? Can anybody recommend resellers, junkyards (in L.A.) or some other source?

Thanks a bunch!!!

Andy

Yes it can be done, but is your diesel an auto or manual shift?
if it a auto you will need to locate the appropriate flywheel and clutch assembly for a 240 ,then the peadal assembly.
basically the whole thing bolts together but you need a long list of bits to get it right. There is a list on the MBparts.org lists. You will need to search for it though.

What about into an even earlier car? Say a '71 220D?
I'd really like to save that poor little engine a few revs on the highway!

Same deal,If you look at enough merc engines especially anything built before 1990 they all interchange, you just need the bits to do the job.Thats the difficult bit.I've never seen any 5 speeders here in OZ,nearly every Merc sold hewre is a auto trans. My mother bought a 230-6 brand new that had a 4 speed and it's the only one i've ever seen. They are bitch to drive though.

Hey, Mercmad, thanks for the info. You're the first to reply to this and I've posted several times...

Anyway, ny 240d is a manual (I don't like autos), so I think everything is pretty much in place to make the swap. I figured that I would need to replace the transmission, of course, but also the front part of the drive shaft, since that is probably different because I think the 5 speed tranny is probably a few inches longer than the 4-speed.

So it all just bolts together...

I'll let you know how it goes!

I'm gonna go up to a junkyard in Sun Valley (CA) to see if I can find a pretty good used one, but that'll be after I finish converting the thing to run on veggie oil this weekend...
