RE: 220D On the road pics

Nice looking car. How's the inside? Just bought a
71 220D from an estate. stored in a barn for last 15 years. Runs good, Psint somewhat faded, lots of igeon poop on it, but its a runner. got it all cleaned up, changed everything, 43K on it. All for the sum of $500.00 [:D]

Did upgrade the radio to a Becker Europa Stero II, and I am amazed what stations that will pull in, with its 40" antenna!! [8)]

real engines don't have spark plugs

RE: 220D On the road pics

I'll post a pic with an Inside view soon,It's not In excellent shape...but not too shabby either.
Yesterday while I was out giving her a wax job,the guy I bought It off of stopped by to hand me the Owners manual :)
The guy that sold It to him had just stopped In a bit earlier than he and asks "You want another one"?
Well,I had to ask "What cha got"?
He's says a 1974 240D...so we go off to his place to see the beast.Only bad thing is that all of the brake calipers are frozen.
At $250.00 each...I just may have to pass on that deal.
Ah,he also wanted $500.00 for It.
I enjoy this ride...kinda fun :)

RE: 220D On the road pics

Ouch! You got a sweet deal! I got a '72 220D out of Rockford, Illinois and it was pretty rough. It had floorboard repair and some body work. Motor had pretty tired glow plugs...those old things with the heavy wire between them and the glow element inside the car. I replaced it with a Bosch 7 second system that works very well. As for the calipers, they were all shot and yes, I just spent a grand fixing that problem, including rotor replacement. But what a fabulous brake system it has now! It smokes but I'm just having too much fun driving it to care. I have a 2000 Golf TDI and this Benz has more pep than the VW. It doesn't seem to be getting all that great fuel economy but I'm not worrying about that right now. I'm just happy how well it's running.

Mine is a 4 speed manual shift with roll up windows and no power steering. Wierd, huh? It's like an old Saudi taxicab.

Yours is much cleaner looking than mine. Good job!

RE: 220D On the road pics

This had a new paint job when I bought it,also had new tires & exhaust system (someone gave up).
Yours looks nice too....sorry you had to put those brake calipers in tho [:0]
I bought this baby a year ago for $450.00.
Put $250.00 in it,and like you said "so fun to drive"!!
I can't help but wonder what happened to all these 220D's ???
And most of these shop talk forums say very little about them or have little help [:0]
Oh well.....what a fun ride Benzers!!!!!
