RE: will a 6.9 engine replace a 4.5 in a 450 sel
A better bet is to buy one of the many 6.9's on eBay,and an even better Idea is to buy the best you can afford.
They have a superior suspension to the regular 450SEL,being all Hydropnuematic and height adjustable. The same suspension is under the W126 500SEL Euro.
So if you have a 6.9 (it's refered to as an M-100),why not look at fitting it into a W126?,the ultimate sleeper, plenty of 380,500's around ,Cheap with blown motors.
Even the 380 SEC would be a great candidate.
when Harem said they "only" have 300BHP he has obviously never driven one,the torque is the thing, factory torque levels are so high that MB insist that when a M-100 car is tested on a dyno,it is done in third only and the vehicle is to chained down.the tires must be pumped up hard to prevent slip.
It makes me laugh when i read that the latest MB with an AMG badge has a torque level of 600Nm.the 6.3 M-100 ,Stock,in third,on a dyno will pull 4000Nm.And that is from an engine first marketed in 1964.and don't forget, these engines are working at 2500RPM,barely ticking over!.
Also, the trans and the diff in the 6.9 are externally identical to the 116 450 trans and diff.the engine has a dry sump,so there is a seperate oil tank, thats the major difference in the body work.wiring loom is identical, same CIS injection etc etc .
The 6.3 is the different one,and better.
The main disadvantage...money!,these may be the greatest engine MB ever put in a car,but they cost,BIG TIME.injectors for a 6.3 ? $4,000 .....EACH.
have a look at our site, www.m-100.cc
for an unbiased :D veiw of the M-100 cars.
